What makes a repo a repo? Specifically, I forked, changed, committed, and pushed a project and everything works OK, but my account says 0 repos used and it doesn't show up in a search. Do I have to do something to make it public?

Forks don't show up in search result, only base repos. The count should be right though, what page are you seeing 0 on?

Thanks. The zero must have been user error (refresh problem maybe) because it is there now. If I diverge so much it doesn't make sense to merge back, can I change a fork to a new project so people can find it?

Yes, you can either do it yourself by making a new repo and pushing to it, or we can de-fork your existing repo for you.
